Cross Peru’s spectacular Altiplano

Bolivia & Peru

A fantastic mix of spectacular scenery and impressive archeological sites, this tour follows the historical route of the Inca empire from its precursors in the Ayamara civilization of Tiwanaku, to the shores of Lake Titicaca (home of the Inca creation myth), to Machu Picchu (the place of worship of the sun god), and to Cusco, the richest city of the ancient New World.

We start in the bustling city of La Paz, clinging to a canyon in a most dramatic setting surrounded by snow-capped mountains. The sprawling 2nd Century BCE site of Tiwanaku sets the architectural tone for the amazing structures of the Inca empire to come. We explore the Bolivian and Peruvian sides of the shimmering deep blue jewel of Lake Titicaca; visiting its islands and shores to observe traditional villages and pre-Columbian ruins. The scenic train from Puno to Cusco takes us to the Sacred Urubamba Valley, where we explore the amazing structures at Pisac, Moray, and Ollantaytambo, as well as colourful markets and small villages. We’ll take our time to feel the energy of heavenly Machu Picchu – crown jewel of Inca civilization. In Cusco we’ll admire the contradiction of ornate cathedrals and Inca ruins as we stroll the narrow streets, visit artists’ studios, and meet archeologists engaged in preservation.
