Andean Ecuador with alumni UBC

This South American country has it all; spectacular mountains, sublime cloud forests, photogenic colonial architecture, and colourful indigenous markets. We’ll sample all of these on our trip guaranteed to beat the November blues.

Begin in historic Quito with its lovely plazas, 17th century churches and monasteries and restored mansions. Dramatically situated with the Andes Mountains all around, Quito’s historic centre is a jewel and a Unesco World Heritage site.

Then stay for two nights at the breathtaking Mashpi Lodge, a creation of steel and glass deep in the cloud forest of the Ecuadorian Choco, one of the planet’s biodiversity hotspots. Floor-to-ceiling and wall-to-wall windows mean nothing competes with the incredible nature that surrounds you here. This wilderness retreat is a unique close-up experience with some of the most pristine forests in the world.

At Hacienda Zuleta, we are hosted by the owner Fernando Polanco who fell in love with B.C. during his time studying at Malaspina College. This 16th Century Spanish Colonial Hacienda is owned by the Plazas – a family with deep roots in the political and social life of Ecuador. Two of the previous owners were Presidents of Ecuador -- famous diplomats renowned for their social responsibility with the inhabitants of the communities surrounding Hacienda Zuleta. Spend time with Margarita Plaza and Fernando Polanco, managers and co-owners of Hacienda Zuleta, who will share their family history and their knowledge of Ecuadorean social and political history. Most importantly, they, and the hacienda´s chefs, will surprise you with their superb recipes that go back in the family tradition. While at the Hacienda, visit the largest and best preserved Pre-Colombian archeology site in the country and the Andean Condor Rehabilitation and Reproduction Project, and ride the famous Zuleteño horse – a mix of Andalusian, English and Quarter horse.

This is a trip full of new colours, tastes and views; a magical mixture of history, nature and culture.
